The Maryland Sheriffs' Association honors Deputies each year at our annual Professional Development Training Seminar.  Nominations are accepted for Deputy of the Year for the following categories:

  • Valor
  • Community Service
  • Crime Prevention
  • Contribution to Profession
  • Corrections
  • Traffic Safety

We invite you to nominate worthy Deputies from your Office for these prestigious awards.  All awards are based upon activities and actions undertaken between January 1, 2023 through December 31, 2023.

 


 

Criteria for Nomination/Judging

 

Valor (1 Award)

This award may be presented to an individual who exhibited exceptional courage, attended by extraordinary decision, presence of mind and swiftness of action regardless of their own personal safety in an effort to save or in the saving of the life of any person or persons in imminent danger, or in the apprehension of a dangerous felon.

Community Service (2 Awards - large/small agency)

This award may be presented to an individual who compiled an outstanding performance record in service to the community either outside or inside of normal police assignments, has received unusual recognition for service to the community, or has performed a single outstanding community service activity that would merit recognition.

Contribution to Profession (2 Awards - large/small agency)

This award may be presented to an individual who recognized a need and through dedication of effort and duty, formulated, developed and implemented plans which have introduced new and innovative ideas, enhanced the professional image of their agency or has saved time, increased effectiveness, or has raised the morale of the agency.

Crime Prevention (2 Awards - large/small agency)

This award may be presented to an individual who made outstanding contributions to the prevention of crime by such actions as educating citizens in public safety measures, designing improved security techniques, developing and implementing effective police operational strategies or tactics, solving crimes and apprehending criminals, or in carrying out a single act of crime prevention that would merit recognition.

Corrections (1 Award)

This award may be presented to an individual who achieved an outstanding professional record in their daily performance as a correctional officer in promoting and contributing to enhanced public safety by safeguarding the public from criminal activity and improving the justice system using responsible and humane correctional policies and practices.

Traffic Safety (2 Awards - large/small agency)

This award is conferred upon a individual law enforcement officer who made a substantial contribution towards traffic safety. The award is not based solely on enforcement numbers, but on purpose driven enforcement that answers an identified community issue through a mixture of enforcement, commitment and educational efforts.

 


NOTE: Remember, you can only nominate ONE person in one of the six categories listed. Winners from previous years are not eligible in the same category but can be nominated in a different category. Please remember we are looking for outstanding individuals only. *Please limit your narrative to 800 words or less. You may also submit relevant newspaper clippings, photographs and video footage in electronic format. Deadline is May 15, 2024. 


 

Nominations can be submitted electronically to Sheriff Maxwell Uy, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office at  Maxwell.Uy@montgomerycountymd.gov up to the deadline date of May 15, 2024.

Awards will be presented to the winners in each category during the MCPA/MSA Professional Development Training Seminar in September 2024.
